PASSION FLOWER

Passion flower are probably one of the most unusual and colourful climbing plants grown outdoors in this country. These evergreen climbers will grow rapidly, supporting themselves with their tendrils.  They are best situated in a warm, sunny position in fertile, well-drained soil conditions.   

Pruning - Cut out dead, damaged or weak shoots in the spring if the plant is damaged by frost it can be cut back to ground level from where it will shoot again.

Varieties:

 

PASSIFLORA CAERULEA 

Flowering time:  June Sept    Height: 5-8m

This variety is probably the one most commonly seen in the garden. It is also one of the hardiest preferring a south or west facing aspect. It produces an abundance of blue and white flowers all through the summer followed by orange fruit in late summer and autumn.  It is not recommended that this fruit be eaten. Frost hardy.

 

P. Caerulea CONSTANCE ELLIOTT 

Flowering time:  May October   Height: 5-8m

A cultivar of the blue and white passion flower this variety produces pure white fragrant flowers, followed by orange fruit in the autumn.  It is not recommended that this fruit be eaten. This variety needs a sheltered position in the garden and is ideal for patio pots and conservatories. Frost hardy.

 

P. Belotti EMPRESS EUGENIE

 

Flowering time:  March November      Height: 3m

This exotic plant produces large sweet-scented pink, white and blue flowers up to 12cm wide.  These plants need protecting from frost and are ideal for patio pots and conservatories. Frost tender.

 

 

.Violacea  EYNSFORD GEM

 

Flowering time:  April November   Height: 1.5m

An almost shrubby passion flower this variety produces purple and white flowers usually in racemes of up to eight blooms.  This plant will only grow in a very sheltered position and is ideal for patio pots and conservatories. Frost tender.

 

 

 

PASSIFLORA VIOLACEA

 

Flowering time:  August October   Height: 4m

This exotic plant produces large bluish-purple and white flowers. This plant will only grow in a very sheltered position and is ideal for patio pots and conservatories. Frost tender.
